"Be like that bird there in the live oak," Gary told me over the back fence. "Don't overthink your decisions. Take action but don't fall in love with any one particular outcome. You'll get your supper sure enough. What difference does it make if it's a worm or a cricket?"
"Well, there's the texture thing. I'd take crunchy over slimy any day."
"You're a bird. It all tastes good."
"I'm a human and I've lost the thread of our conversation."
"You don't have to force anything to happen, Tess. It is happening right now as we speak. This test, or shitty year as you call it, will run its course in due time. Then you'll either get what you want or what's coming. Trust me on that one."
"I'll have my fill of worms and crickets and wonder why I ever despaired?"
"Yeah, something like that."
"What if I don't know what I want?"
"You want this shitty year to drag on into the next, and then the next year after that?"
"I get your point, Gary." Be like the bird, we said in unison.
