Darla reached into her windbreaker pocket and traced the pattern on the wooden disc over and over again with her index finger.

Gebo.

She made three sets of runes during the offseason when he'd brought over some felled apple wood after a storm had blown through the area. He just so happened to be in the neighborhood was the line he used. Darla was spooked by the unexpected visit, but she gratefully accepted the gift.

Ort.

"You need help, Darla?" She wiped the sweat from her face and ran a shaky hand through the hair that had tumbled loose from the big blue rubber band stamped 'asparagus.'

"Oh hey, hi Ort! Thanks for the hand!" Darla cracked the door of the cab just a tad. Her cargo had been rather rambunctious on the ride over. She smelled the sea and heard the scratch of talons. There was no turning back, not with Ort pulling on the handle. "Oh yeah…opening day nerves…"

"Here, let me unload this stuff for you. Hey… you got a dog back there?" Darla was elated and mortified all in one quick turn. Her art had spoken to someone other than herself. This was a good sign, wasn't it?
