Hot weather compels me to fork over cash for glossy pictures of skinny girls and make like Easy Reader. Securing a shady haven and a rickety chaise is sublime downtime as I listen to the plinking of water against the faux stone of our backyard fountain. The next best thing to a beachy retreat and highly preferable to pool noodle fights down at the ol’ community swimmin’ hole. And, since I’m convinced I have Skeeter Syndrome, a can of bug repellent is at the top of my list of fun-in-the-sun essentials.

What’s in your summer tote bag, and to what locales do you tote it?

  • My mind and body are dragging from a 5:30 a.m. check in. Thank goodness the medical center provides free coffee and pastry. A long day it was. My husband was in the operating room for over three hours having spinal surgery. Everything went according to plan, so let the bone graft healing begin! Happy to say my husband was able to eat Saltines and Jello with his pain meds cocktail, so here’s hoping for a Friday release.

And on the homefront, schnauzer lands in bowl of cucumber dip and bunnies have moved into my backyard. Oh yeah…we’re in for some sizzling sun. 40C / 102F, anyone? Hopefully the heat will help the hubby heal.

I try to be mindful of where I step when traipsing through a field. Indian blanket and bachelor button hide in the tall grass that rustles and sways in the warm breeze. It is with great ease that I lose myself in the vibrant palette of my tucked away meadow.

  • Spinal fusion

Less invasive non-surgical and surgical procedures have not corrected my husband’s protruding disks or lessened the intense pain he’s been suffering. He will be having spinal fusion surgery next week. We hope this brings permanent relief after years of back pain and, recently, loss of mobility.

If anyone has undergone this operation, please leave a comment as to your experiences. How has life changed for you post fusion?

A heavy-handed tale, that Avatar is. Beat your message into my skull with blacklight poster dinosaurs:

    War is bad.

    Environmentalism is good.

    Demagoguery is bad.

Saving the noble savages from themselves is good.

We have the technology and a platoon of Space Marines.

I know, I know. The crowds roared. I got bored.

Not a fan of Jim am I.

    I am:

    Dances with Wolves without Tatanka

Return of the Jedi without Ewoks

What a fun addition to my never-ending reading list. I’ve come across a few of these titles over the years, and I’m curious to know how well the stories stack up against each author’s more widely read library of work.

Have you read any of these lesser-known novels? What were your thoughts and impressions?
