• PromiseA promise to eat something green during the Yuletide season is a noble goal. Based on personal experience, there are plenty of December pitfalls which quickly turn into New Year's Resolutions:

    I mustn't…
    I must…
    I need to…
    I want to…
    Less of one thing.
    More of another.

When darkness comes early, and a little light is much needed medicine, ease up on the would've-could've- should've lament. Be kind to yourself, and to others. Small steps taken daily will provide more, and less, of the necessary things in good time.

  • ListenCold nights lend themselves to long, involved dreams which leave one worn out in the morning. Perhaps the sluggishness is due to tugging at the comforter, and kicking loose the well-tucked sheet, and tossing when a turn was intended. And high above it all, Ella sings clear and true, taking care to tread lightly atop each note. The fitful sleeper sucks in his breath to listen. An intoxicating voice unlocks doors to hidden rooms which house the secrets we're supposed to air out under the winter sun. There is much work to be done once the head hits the pillow and the eyes slide shut, with or without angel song.

  • HorizonIt was always the way with Margot. She'd leave notes on desks, or envelopes in letterboxes, with tiny bits of wisdom and warnings to keep us in check. The last message Margot sent me was typed on the back of a grocery list. She needed many things on that particular shopping day. But the typewritten words were what grabbed my attention, and they have never let go.

    Gabriela, dear:

Each story you create leaves an indelible mark on your soul. All the signals and signs which litter the universe point in the direction you were least likely to go. Don't try and tell me you've never noticed. Separation doesn’t exist when you place your faith in dreams. By the simple act of allowing a thought to enter your head, you’ve opened the way for chance and probability to walk hand-in-hand toward the horizon.
