And so the bulletin came across my machine today at work:
WEATHER UPDATE
Responding to local weather challenges
In response to the winter storm that is impacting much of the eastern U.S. and Canada, Theresa's Place of Employment in Plano is encouraging employees to work from home, where appropriate, to conserve electricity and enable emergency crews to restore essential services. Note that offices are still open for those offering customer support and other critical services that cannot be managed remotely. Please contact your manager if you have any doubts about whether you should work from the office or remotely. We will be assessing the situation and sending updates for the next few days as systems return to normal.
My husband and I have been negotiating icy roads the past two days to make sure we hold down the proverbial fort. The wheels of industry haven't come to a grinding halt, but finding faces in the hallways has proven a fruitless endeavor. I'm not even convinced that driving into work during an extreme weather event makes us dedicated employees. In my case, I'm just stubborn and don't like being told what to do. Besides, having the office to myself has been rather enjoyable. I'm actually getting work done. True, what I do can easily be accomplished at home. But then we'd be missing out on the adventure of braving bracing temperatures and seeing the highway littered with jackknifed 18 wheelers. Certainly not a typical February in the Metroplex.
