On a peaceful Sunday afternoon, made all the more serene by steadily falling snow outside my window, I can't help but be sickened and angry over the massacre in Tucson yesterday. Purveyors of hate are responsible for this national tragedy. Provocative words that come out of the mouths of talking heads and Senators, evoking hostility and inciting violence, were bound to be taken as gospel by someone of unsound mind. I will never understand the politics of fear and exclusion that are cornerstones of the Far Right. Let this be a lesson, one taught to us with the blood of the innocent, that reason and empathy must rule the day. Repudiate hate and ignorance in all its forms: from the folksy Soccer Mom from Alaska who's "just like you and me," to the bloated talk show host that implores his listeners to target those not like them. We all need to think and speak responsibly. -

Today I have been in the
Radio Hall for the first time in my life. It was great. I came
for an interview about the "new way of reading" and it was about reading

Hi Karin! Your day in the studio must have been an amazing experience. A bit of well-deserved recognition, too. I'll need to figure out how to listen to your interview!

Upon returning to work after a restful holiday break, I walked into an uproar over a matter that I had to leave in the hands of my colleagues. The situation concerned putting together a portfolio for a major client. I left express directions for my work mates to follow regarding where I was in the project, what remained to be finished, and some helpful tips. With that, I shut the book on 2010 and departed for my much needed vacation. And then Monday morning happened. The project was completed on time, but in less than stellar fashion. The portfolio was missing data. A lot of it. My colleagues didn't think there was anything wrong with the meager offering and submitted the project. No suspicions were raised. No questions asked. For this, my cohorts deserve a time out in the corner. People of varying pay grades got wind of the fine work we did and a maelstrom of nasty grams flew around the office. It was I that had the pleasure of answering for our misfortunate performance. I will be the one to pick up the pieces and resuscitate this sorry affair. I'm neither angry nor upset. If anything, I'm intrigued by how people's brains work, mine included. I've never been afraid to ask questions. No one I've ever encountered has been put out by a question that could potentially save a project from derailing. Next time, maybe my work buddies will raise their hands and call for a huddle when things don't look right. Perhaps the lesson I'll take away from this is to leave nothing undone before going on vacation. Or never go on vacation. -

Today I loaned a book to my friend Monica. I'm in McKinney. Monica lives in Greenlake. How'd they manage that, you ask? Easy! Amazon has recently launched a feature enabling Kindle owners and Kindle reading application users to share books. Reading recommendations are always a treat to give and receive. In the case of two friends separated by a large chunk of the country, lendable Kindle titles are a wonderful way to stay connected. I'm looking forward to the books that Monica and I will discover together as we read our way through 2011. -
Safety first, boys. Just because they're tiny doesn't mean they don't have some giddy-up-and-go. Always wear your helmets and only ride in designated areas. Happy Pocketbiking!
