• SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea's Kim Jong Il made his elusive youngest son a
four-star general in a major promotion seen Tuesday as confirmation that he is
slated to become the country's next leader.

There is probably little hope that a dynastic succession in North Korea will alleviate the suffering of its citizens. Even a slight thaw in diplomatic relations could make humanitarian aid a possibility, even a priority. And what about the nukes? It's true that disarmament begins at home. Charity, too, for that matter. But bringing stability to a tense and desperate situation can only benefit humanity. I hope we're given a chance to take those many small steps toward understanding…and toward peace.

A fine time was had at Nancy and Tino’s nuptials. Lovely church service, though the pastor officiating was the spot on embodiment of Ned Flanders. Same folksy banter and all. Plenty of work buddies attended the festivities, and we all had tasty libations and marvelous Mexican delicacies to celebrate the occasion. I adored the reception’s Magic Kingdom theme with carriage and glass slipper favors, and a wedding cake topper reminiscent of a scene straight out of Cinderella. Fun!

Here’s wishing the newlyweds many happy years of magic and merry-making.

Rain is a lucky sign on one’s wedding day. A few drops fell as my husband and I tied the knot (although I recall more dust and debris raining down on us that wind swept day in Vegas.) We get to attend a wedding today and the weather is calling for thunderstorms. Lightning has already lit up the gray morning sky. Not a particularly good mix for ladies in fancy dresses, so I hope we all make it to the church on time. Safe and dry.

  • Maggie Today is a sad day. Maggie had a stroke last night about 10:00 and passed away at 8:30 this morning. She was 14 years old and had a very good life. She was a great dog and will be missed. Maggie was much loved and will always be in our hearts. Waverly and Lily will miss their cousin.

So many wonderful titles! What to choose? "The Gals" have a lot to write about, and I need more hours in the day to read their stories. It's a comforting thought to know these ebooks are close at hand waiting to be enjoyed.

  • was this manic, I can hardly wait for Friday. One of those days where people took leave of their senses (left behind on the breakfast table, no doubt), and chaos reigned supreme. Everyone wanted something as I wrestled to keep my head screwed on. I felt as though my cranium would up and take flight. I’m not even sure what I accomplished today, other than chasing my tail. For now, it’s a little supper and a chapter or two before I worry about tackling Tuesday.

  • Morning blossomThe light from my kitchen window provides constant inspiration. It’s a perfect display of illumination, and I never pass by without stopping to look. The objects don’t change, but their mood and character do depending on how the light decides to play at that precise moment: full on sunbeam, diffused and streaky, or a glowing trickle. Even a dark afternoon is bathed in its own special lighting, creating a striking portrait of the Very Real. And what is more beautiful than the things you reach out and touch every day?

  • Western Wire  The rattling of nerves and an addled brain keep nervous time with the wind and rain. There’s only one antidote to quell my restless spirit; a day lost in pleasant sounds and dispatches from home.
