I like to travel light. Packing a few essentials such as a good ear will serve one well in all sorts of situations. Dress it up or dress it down, the skill of listening enables smooth sailing and a firm grasp of whatever reality comes your way. Keep ‘em open. You’d be surprised how many people could use a willing ear.

“I will say this: Today, we are going to thank Pete Carroll and his staff. They
did an outstanding job,” 49ers coach Mike Singletary said. “It was good medicine
for us. We have to swallow it. Bitter. There’s no sugar coating it at all.”via www.seahawks.com

On this day of gridiron battles, the lightness of nine year olds playing tackle football is clouded by memories of terror and smoke. Sitting on a bleacher, inhaling humidity and doughnut glaze, cheering for the home team is delicious, empty-headed Freedom. I feel no need to be ironic or judgmental. However, I do feel the need to remember and question. Question whether or not there can ever be winners in the game of gaining ground.

Getting a leg up. Putting one’s best foot forward. Taking a step in the right direction. Standing on my own two feet. Stepping on people’s toes.
There’s a call I need to take. Trouble is, the phone hasn’t rung in weeks. The message must have gotten lost in translation and now it’s a bother to try and decipher. Those words sound better coming out of somebody else’s mouth anyway. It’s the forming of, the biting down on, the spitting up that leaves the matter open to interpretation.
Best to take a hike. Hit the road. Shuffle on off. Dance around the issue. Hightail it out of town.

I’ve stepped away for a few days, but I’ve found my way back. Hard to ignore the laptop’s black screen and detritus piled high on my desk singing in unison: Hey Ho Lazy Girl. Time to get t’writin’. Well, sometimes even fleeting thoughts need to recharge. The lovely month of September has arrived, and with it, change. For my brother Ron, he’s just added another year onto his timeline. I’m marking a year of service at my current place of employment with the special reward of a waffle iron. My colleague, on the other hand, and 999 others were laid off. That maneuver blindsided us all. I’ve felt anxious and less inclined to keep my nose to the grindstone in light of this “right sizing” or “realignment of competencies” or whatever the hell the clever catch phrase is for sacking people’s arses. A sober thought it is knowing I could very well be writing about my job loss. It’s stressful to consider that my neck may be meeting the chopping block come the next go ‘round. September has brought with it a coolness in the breeze, but I wasn’t expecting the air to take on such a cold, bitter quality. My favorite season has been roughed up and tarnished.

Our online library of new literature by both celebrated and emerging authors is
available for free, at the touch of button. Carry Narrative easily with
you anywhere and read anytime.Stories on the go. Who doesn't love that? However, the word "free" is used too freely since one must first own an iDevice to enjoy the goods.
No matter. I'm downloading the Narrative App to my phone as I jot down this note. I'll be having a story with my soup for lunch today.
Ahh, yummy literature!
